Sri Lankan Sports Ministry Launches Probe into Spot-fixing Allegations Regarding 2011 World Cup
The Sports Minister of Sri Lanka has launched an official probe for investigating the allegations that were put forth by former Sri Lankan sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, regarding the finals of the 2011 World Cup.
Aluthgamage had earlier claimed that the final between India and Sri Lanka was fixed and that the Sri Lankan team lost the game on purpose.
Players from the Sri Lankan team, who participated in the finals of the game had ridiculed the comments made by Aluthgamage.
Players including Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene commented that “Aluthgamage, should produce some evidence to back up his claims”.
Jayawardene had famously scored a century in the final of the tournament, this was the only century of the game.
Further commenting on the matter, Jayawardene stated that “Aluthgamage, was playing with the sentiments of the people to win their trust as the elections are just around the corner”.
Besides Aluthgamage, Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s former World Cup-winning captain had also called for an investigation into issues relating to corruption around the final of the 2011 World Cup.
