MCC announces an extension of the Presidency for Kumar Sangakkara for an additional year.
Kumar Sangakkara took charge of The MCC in October.
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has released an official statement announcing that Kumar Sangakkara the current president of the club, will continue on with his post for another year. Sangakkara who was appointed as the president of the club in October of last year will now remain as the president of the club till September of 2021. The main reason that Sangakkara was given an extension in his term, was mainly because of the Coronavirus outbreak, since the viral outbreak, no cricket has been played anywhere in the world. The final approval for Sangakkara’s extension of the contract will be based on the decision made by the members during the AGM of the club which is expected to be held in late June. Most presidents who serve the MCC leave the post after a 12-month tenure, only a few presidents have ever served a term which was more than 12 months. The last time this happened, was during World War 1 and World War 2 when Lord Hawke and Stanley Christopherson served as presidents for four and six years respectively. Sangakkara is the first-ever President of the MCC from the outside of the UK. Kumar Sangakkara took charge of The MCC on October 1.
