After the tragic death of George Floyd in the USA, people around the globe have been demanding justice for him and have started the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Apart from commoners, celebrities too have been standing strong in this moment. Bollywood celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and many others came out in support of the movement. But, it did not go down well with Indians as they bashed these celebs for being a hypocrite as they still endorse fairness creams.
Amidst this online backlash, a video of Priyanka rejecting fairness creams endorsements has been making the rounds of the internet. In this throwback interview with NDTV, Priyanka narrated her own experience of inequality and being made fun of over her skin colour. PeeCee said, all her cousins in her family were extremely fair and she was the dusky one because her father was dusky.
Priyanka further said, “Just for fun, my Punjabi family would call me ‘kaali’. At 13, I wanted to put fairness creams and wanted my complexion changed.” The actress then accepted that she did endorse a fairness product for about a year. However, she felt that she looked pretty alright regardless and decided she didn’t want to continue with it. “Then I didn’t do it, but I was also finding my ground that time as I was 21 or 22 years old,” she added.
Priyanka was asked if she would ever endorse fairness creams, and she said a plain no. “I have been offered many times, but I said no to them,” shared the actress.
