Kevin Pietersen Feels That Role of Captaincy Will Add Extra Pressure on Stokes

Former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen has commented that “the decision to promote Ben Stokes as the skipper of the Test side for the team’s first Test against West Indies in the coming month, would be a bad idea, as it would add unnecessary pressure on the cricketer”.

Pietersen feels that “wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler should be handed the reigns of captaincy in the absence of Root”.

Joe Root, who is the skipper of the English side in the Test format, will be missing out on the first Test of the series, as he is expecting the birth of his child, during that time. Root had backed Stokes, who is the current vice-captain of the team, to lead the team in his absence.

Ben Stokes, however, has limited experience as a skipper and has played as a captain on just three occasions.

Speaking on the matter Pietersen commented that “the role of captaincy adds extra pressure on players and that not all players can fill in the role of captain”.

He further stated that “captaincy changes how players view you in the dressing room and that his own experiences as captain of the English side were disastrous”.

 

The first Test between England and West Indies is set to kick off from the 8th of June.
