Former West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy has commented that “he had faced racist remarks while he was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in the IPL”.
Sammy commented that “on many occasions, he and fellow cricketer Thisara Perera were refereed to as Kalu”.
Darren Sammy who has been a vocal proponent of the civil rights movement going on in America at the moment, wants the ICC to look at racism in cricket as well.
Speaking on the matter, Sammy commented that “at the time he received the remarks he did not understand the Indian language and thought that people were referring to him as a strong black man when calling him Kalu”.
However, since then he has understood the meaning of the word, and had commented that “every time he remembers the incident it makes him angry”.
Sammy has represented West Indies in 68 T20 internationals, 126 ODI’s and 38 Tests. He was also the captain of the West Indies side across all formats, for a few years.
Earlier last week another former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle had also commented that he too had faced racist remarks while being part of different T20 leagues across the world. before Darren Sammy Reveals His Experience with Racism in the IPL
