Cricket Australia Decided To Cut Size of National Umpire Panel

Cricket Australia has decided to reduce the number of umpires in its national panel from 12 to 10 as a part of the cost-cutting measures that are currently, in place to ensure the financial stability of the board.

The move was reportedly mutually agreed upon by the umpires and the board, and no person has lost their job, as a result of the move.

The two umpires whose names were removed from the panel include Simon Fry and John Warn, both these umpires had retired early this year, and CA had not named replacements for them.

Another umpire Geoff Joshua, whose contract was not renewed by the board, was replaced by Darren Close thus maintaining the number of umpires at 10.

Speaking on the matter, Peter Roach the Head of Cricket Operations for CA, commented that “they were thankful to the umpires, for understanding the situation and coming to an agreement”.

Out of these 10 umpires, four are allowed to officiate international encounters in Australia and three are part of the ICC panel of elite umpires, these include Paul Reiffel, Rod Tucker, and Bruce Oxenford.
