West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has commented that “he has faced several racist remarks over the course of his career, as a cricketer, and that even though cricket has been referred to as a gentleman’s game, it is still not free from racism”.
Gayle commented that “most of the offensive remarks that he received were when he was playing for different T20 leagues, around the world”. However, Gayle did not specify his experiences and only hinted on the matter.
Several cricketers of color have come out addressing the matter of racism of late, all thanks to the ongoing protests in the USA, regarding the death of George Floyd, at the hand of state police. Several cricketers have pledged their support towards the matter.
Gayle made a post in social media, commented that “black lives matter, just as the lives of the people of any other race”.
He comments that “other races should stop considering black people as fools and that the blacks should try and stop bringing a bad reputation to their own people”. Gayle made this post, through his Instagram profile.
Chris Gayle speaks on Instagram against racism in cricket following widespread protests in the United States.
Chris Gayle’s former international teammate Daren Sammy also urged ICC and various cricket boards to speak out against racism.
