Australia Cricket Committee considering Use of Disinfectant On Cricket Ball

Cricket Australia, is currently considering using disinfectants of cricket balls when cricket resumes posting the COVID-19 outbreak. It is reported that Cricket Australia is in talks with the ICC, in matters regarding using disinfectant to cleanse the ball, so that the ball remains sterile at all times, and that the players are not affected.

Speaking on the matter, Alex Kountouris the Cricket Australia’s Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager, commented that “Cricket Australia is still coming up with plans to maintain players safety”. With the recent ban on the use of saliva on the ball, the use of disinfectants would add an additional layer of safety for all involved in the sport.

Kountouris commented that “the board will need permission from the ICC before they can use disinfectant to clean the ball”. He commented that “it would be hard to use the disinfectant on the ball, as it is made out of leather, and has an uneven surface”. Kountouris stated that “since Australia will return to cricket much later than other countries, they have the option of picking up and following the rules that are being enforced by other cricketing nations”.
