Afghanistan cricketer Shafiqullah Shafiq banned For Six Years Due To Corruption

Afghanistan wicket-keeper batsman Shafiqullah Shafiq has been handed a six-year ban from all forms of cricket after having being found guilty of being involved in practices related to corruption. Shafiq was charged under four separate charges related to corruption, and he accepted being guilty of breaching all the four charges that were leveled against him.

These charges include Article 2.1.1, which involves players involved in match-fixing, Article 2.1.3, which involves accepting offers from match-fixers, Article 2.1.4, forcing other players to participate in the corruption and Article 2.4.4, which involves failing to report such approaches to the respective authorities.

Shafiq had reportedly tried to lure a fellow player during the Afghanistan Premier League. Speaking on the matter, Sayed Anwar Shah Quraish the Anti-corruption manager of the Afghanistan cricket board, commented that, “this incident is proof that players cannot avoid their involvement in corrupt practices from the board”.

He commented that “all players contracted with the board, go through an educational program that teaches them to deal with such situations, and report such matters to the authorities in time”.
